The OPEN MRI technology works the same as a conventional MRI; however, OPEN MRI machines have lower magnetic field strength and are designed to accommodate patients who might be unable to have a conventional MRI exam. Due to lower magnetic field strength, the scan times will be longer. Certain conditions may prevent any MRI examination. Patients with a cardiac pacemaker, aneurysm clip in the head or physical limitations where the patient is unable to remain still cannot safely have an MRI. After careful screening, CT or nuclear medicine may provide alternatives in some circumstances.
